A 41-year-old unidentified woman was found dead with her 3-year-old daughter ‘clinging’ to her body in Beaumont, Texas.
According to People magazine, while driving on I-10 service road, the police said the woman came in contact with an abundance of water. She eventually pulled into a parking lot, where she later got stuck, and the two were forced to get out of the vehicle.
Once out of the vehicle, the mother and daughter encountered a current and drifted approximately a half a mile from their vehicle into a canal full of water.
Thankfully, two police officers and two fire rescue divers were able to spot the pair, but the mother was pronounced dead after trying to keep her daughter safe above the water.
“They were in the water for quite some time,” Officer Carol Riley, a spokesperson for the Beaumont Police Department, told People magazine. “When the baby was found, the baby was clinging to her. The mother did the best she could to keep her child up over the water.”
“The baby also had a backpack that was helping her float on her back and she was holding on to her mom,” Riley adds.
Someone was able to quickly get the responsive toddler help at a nearby area hospital, according to authorities.
Riley said the child was ‘absolutely saved’ by her mother’s protection and is now in stable condition.
