Now you may not even have a clue as to who the guy pictured in this report is, and that’s fair. He’s young and different with this look and persona as an artist. This artist’s name was Gustav Åhr, better known by his stage name Lil Peep. News broke overnight on social media that Lil Peep died of an apparent drug overdose. He was 21 years old. The artist out of Long Island, NY was labeled as an ’emo rapper’. He was especially unique, cultivating a distinctive alternative rock element infused with today’s contemporary hip-hop sound and melodic delivery. Peep was a strong presence within this new generation of up-and-coming Soundcloud rappers. Many publications covering music culture penned Lil Peep as the next star to blow up, similar to other artists like XXXtentacion and Lil Uzi Vert. Lil Peep showed poetic vulnerability through his songwriting. He was extremely open about his battles with depression, heartbreak, drug use and his bi-sexuality. It resonated deeply within the ‘outcast’ crowd of this tattoed and colored hair alternative subculture within hip-hop. While many criticized him an endorser of this ‘pill-popping’ trend in hip-hop, others saw him as a relatable voice for those suffering from depression, anxiety, and other mental illnesses. An artist who showed so much promise, with a fastly growing cult-like fan base will now, unfortunately, be another ‘what could have been story’.
