Former NBA player Amar’e Stoudemire is receiving backlash over what some consider homophobic comments regarding playing gay teammates.
An interviewer with Israeli site Walla Sport asked Stoudemire, who currently plays for Hapoel Jerusalem in the Israeli Premier League, if he’d have a problem with a gay teammate.
While other players who were asked the same question said they wouldn’t have a problem at all, Stoudemire responded:
“I’m going to shower across the street, make sure my change of clothes are around the corner and and I’m going to drive … take a different route to the gym.”
When asked if he was joking, Amar’e replied, “There’s always a truth within a joke.”
In 2012, Stoudemire was fined $50,000 by the NBA for using a gay slur towards a fan in a direct message in Twitter. It may be time for Amar’e to become a bit more open-minded.
