Now this is lit.
The live action Teen Titans tv show has found it’s Starfire. Actress Anna Diop has been cast as the orange skinned super hero. The 30 year old actress was born in Senegal and moved to the US when she was six years old. Her most recent role was as a series regular on Fox’s 24: Legacy.
Some fans have come out claiming that her casting was a sorry excuse for diversity in the superhero genre. However what they fail to realize is, this isn’t a big deal. Not only is the character of an alien race, but there are other women of color who are playing aliens and bringing those characters to life. There’s Zoe Saldana who plays Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy, an also Zazie Beetz who is set to play the character of Domino in the next Deadpool movie. It’s this kind of representation that makes casting non-white actors to play characters like these such a big deal.
For those of you who may not have a clue who Starfire is, let me briefly fill you in. The character is an exiled princess who found her way to Earth after she was forced off her throne by a ku led by her sister, Blackfire. She’s known for her naivety and blissful yet innocent ignorance. She is the longtime lover of Robin, who’s commonly known as Nightwing in the Teen Titans comics. Lastly, she’s incredibly sexy, I’ll explain. While some have lamented about the over sexualized nature of the character, many don’t realize that it’s a central trait which makes the character who she is. Star fire comes from a people where everything is about free love and body positivity. What makes her so interesting is the fact that she doesn’t understand how or why Earthlings feel so uncomfortable toward things like sex, free love, and their bodies. It greatly explains her naivety and creates opportunities for an interesting story plot.
I’m excited to see how Diop will bring this character to life. Guess we’ll have to wait until 2018.
