This week reports surfaced that the Lakers front office maybe interested in taking a run at Bulls Coach Tom Thibodeau. We know that it will be a matter of time until the Bulls front office and Thibodeau part ways. This report has been noted that it was originated from either the Bulls or Thibodeau camp to create a bidding war between the Bulls and Lakers.
Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak addressed the rumor on Fox Sports Radio to clear the waters:
“I saw something about that this morning, and my first thought was, ‘Let me call [Lakers coach] Byron [Scott] and let him know that the agents are doing their job, and pay no attention.’ Not that I think Byron reads any of that stuff, but someone may call him and say ‘Hey, guess what I just read?’ Nothing to it. We’re incredibly happy with Byron. That’s what representatives and agents do. They try to create a marketplace for their guy, and I’m not saying that’s exactly what happened here, but we’re very, very happy with Byron, and after I hang up with you I’m going to call him or text him.”
Last summer the Lakers were intested in Thibodeau but were not given premission from the Bulls. Right now, Thibodeau is still under contract with Chicago for two more years worth $4M. After the next season, we may see this rumor come to light for the Lakers. Kobe may retire, Lakers may or may not have another selection in the draft top 10, who knows. I do like Thibodeau for the Lakers with his style of coaching. The Lakers have lots of young guys on the roster and a seasoned coach like Thibodeau could open their eyes. Other teams like Orlando and New Orleans could also take a run at Thibodeau after next season. Just too early for any team right now.
