And let the controversy and games begin.
The 2017 XXL Freshmen class has arrived, featuring an array of talented and unique sounds from some of the hottest up-and-coming artists in the game. This year’s class of artist comprised of Bay Area’s own Kamaiyah, A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, PnB Rock, Madeintyo, Playboi Carti, Aminé, Kap G, SuperDuper Kyle, Ugly God and XXXTentacion, who won the 10th spot through fan voting. While some were content with the choices made, others began to criticize XXL for snubbing other notable acts including Tee Grizzley, Young M.A, 6Lack, Cardi B, Lil Pump and Rich The Kid.
As expected, the reveal of this year’s list and magazine cover has created a forum for engaging and sometimes heated online debate. Here are some takeaways from this year’s list. Kamaiyah appears to be the only female rapper to make this year’s class. Artists like Madeintyo, Kap G, Ugly God, and Anime bring up the criticism voiced by many fans claiming that the bar is set too low for artists who only have one one “hit” single to their name.
There’s also speculation that some artists declined to feature on the XXL Freshman Cover this year. As with previous XXL Freshmen classes, only time will tell which of these artists will stand the test of time and longevity, especially in today’s come-and-go ‘singles’ friendly landscape within hip hop.
