Kobe Hasn’t Spoken to His Parents in 3 Years After They Auctioned His Memorabilia

Kobe Bryant should be on top of the world right now. After saying goodbye to the game he loved so much with an exceptional performance, breaking a record for merchandise sold, and celebrating 15 years of marriage with his wife, Vanessa, Kobe’s life seems close to perfect. But one part of Kobe’s life has been missing for the past 3 years…his parents, Joe and Pamela Bryant.

In 2013, Joe and Pamela auctioned off Kobe’s high school memorabilia, without his permission. After making $500,000 selling 6 of Kobe’s items, they issued a statement of “regret” after lawyers worked out an agreement. In an interview with ESPN, Kobe says:

Our relationship is shit. I say [to them], ‘I’m going to buy you a very nice home, and the response is ‘That’s not good enough’? Then you’re selling my shit?

Kobe has since cut his family off financially, including his two sisters, Sharia and Shaya, who have gone on to become college-educated and get their own jobs and take care of themselves.

It is sad to see families broken apart over money. His parents should’ve been sitting next to Vanessa and his daughters at his farewell game, instead they have no relationship with their son at all. That’s what happens when people let greed take control of them. I think Kobe made the right decision by cutting them off financially. I hope that they can establish a relationship soon.
