Looks like Ava DuVernay’s ‘Queen Sugar’ isn’t ending things at season two, as it will be coming back for more with a third, on the Oprah Winfrey Network.
According to Deadline, DuVernay also inked a first-look television deal with ‘Harpo Films’ for TV and digital media that will include the five-part Netflix limited series, ‘Central Park Five.’
If you’re unfamiliar, the ‘Central Park Five’ will be based on the true story of the falsely accused and convicted raping of a New York City jogger in 1989.
Given the magnitude of these announcements, it appears as though DuVernay and Oprah Winfrey’s relationship won’t end with their upcoming film, ‘Wrinkle In Time.’
“I’m so proud of Ava and her ability as a filmmaker to challenge the status quo and push for inclusiveness on screen and behind the camera,” said Winfrey, CEO of OWN and Harpo. “I love, love, love the work we have been able to create so far. I am looking forward to developing many more meaningful projects together.”
With averaging 2.4 million viewers from Warner Horizon’s Scripted Television, it’s no surprise that ‘Queen Sugar’ the Louisiana based tale of the Bordelon siblings, deserves another season.
Deadline also says the network will include a ‘trio of recurring arcs’ in its current season with Michael Michele and Roger Guenveur Smith acting as the estranged parents of Darla (Bianca Lawson), and Beverly Todd as Mother Olivia Brown.
DuVernay will reportedly continue to work with an exclusively female directing team who will be making their debuts this fall with ‘Queen Sugar’ Episodes: Garrett Bradley (Alone), Liesl Tommy (Eclipsed) and Christina Voros (The Ladies).
“There is fresh air and room to roam,” DuVernay said. “There is an artist-driven atmosphere and an intention to share stories that nourish. There is a spirit of inclusivity and imagination moving at all times. This is the new era of OWN. I’m thrilled to continue to collaborate with Ms. Winfrey as we expand the scope of our storytelling. And I feel fortunate to be a small part of this network at such a wonderful time in its evolution.”
We’re here for this.
