Steve Harvey Talks Meeting With Donald Trump, Being Called A ‘Coon,’ & Working With Ben Carson

Remember the time Steve Harvey met with Donald Trump, and people thought he crossed over to the other side? Well, he is finally spilling the details about the meeting’s subjects.

Ahead of the comedian’s talk show relaunch, Harvey got a chance to sit down with The Hollywood Reporter, and dished on the infamous meeting, along with how the whole thing came about.

Harvey allegedly received the invite to meet from Barack Obama’s transition team, who had been in contact with Trump’s transition team.

Since Steve and Obama have relationship, he agreed to the meeting because of his team’s judgement of saying it would be a good idea. After the meeting, the public couldn’t say the same.

“The backlash. It was so vicious that it really threw me. I was being called names that I’ve never been called: Uncle Tom. A coon. A sellout. Because I went to see this man?!” Harvey told The Hollywood Reporter.

The radio personality also revealed he should have listened to his wife who hinted at skipping the meeting to enjoy his birthday.

“Now, here’s the crazy thing: I’m supposed to be on a boat for my 60th birthday, so my wife says, ‘Steve, just take off [and skip the meeting]. You’ll meet with him some other time.’ God, I should’ve listened,” Harvey said.

Instead, Steve went to the meeting, talked golf for a few, told Trump he never had his vote, and started working with Ben Carson.

“And then I told him, ‘Mr. President, I’m going to be honest with you, I didn’t vote for you. I campaigned very hard for Hillary Clinton.’ And I said, “’The problem was that we made a lot of mistakes in the campaign. We were playing checkers and y’all was playing chess. But now that you’re here, you’re the 45th president and I’m going to help you,'” Harvey said.

From there, Harvey began working with the Housing and Urban Development secretary, Ben Carson, to help transform closed schools into vision centers, teach STEM, coding, and other tech skills.

“I’ve been to HUD twice. I’ve met with Dr. Carson and we’re actually trying to get it started. We’ve had meetings, and now we’re just waiting on the final notes. We have several teams in place. Hopefully before the year goes out, we’ll be making the announcement about the first vision center,” Harvey revealed.

As far as Trump goes, the two have not spoken since their initial meeting.
