Anna Hayes, a high school senior in Arkansas received some extremely unsettling feedback from her father after attending her senior prom with her friend Phillip Freeman who also happens to be black.
After viewing photos of the pair on social media, Hayes’ father blew a fuse.
“We are done. I wont be coming to your graduation. Nor will I pay for your college. Go live with the n***ers,” he begins in a text message.
“I went to prom with a black guy so that’s a problem? Racist much,” Anna responded.
“Yes I am,” he admitted. “Your dead to me.”
Hayes’ father even went as far as to refer to Phillip as being “subhuman.”
In an interview with Buzzfeed, Hayes shared that this bigoted explosion from her father seems to be one of many as she recalls some of her earliest childhood memories include her father being “openly racist.”
“He has told me that if I ever dated a black guy that I will and would be dead to him,” Hayes told BuzzFeed. “I stood my ground for what I believe in. He has called me several horrible things before.”
Hayes went on to describe how much her father’s reaction hurt her as she couldn’t understand how anyone could hate someone they don’t even know simply because of their skin color. This issue hit home with Hayes particularly because she has a half-sister on her mother’s side who is biracial.
Sources report that Hayes’ friend Phillip was responsible for taking the texts and photos and posted them to Twitter, where they’ve been re-tweeted over 4,000 times.
Moving forward, Hayes hopes that this creates open dialogue on race relations in 2017.
